Why recipes?

One of the most joyful ways we (especially Americans) can work towards social justice is by changing the way we eat. Eating in a just (and yummy) way will improve our own health, contribute to the health of others, and change the environmental conditions of the world in a significant way. Exploring my food options is one of my favorite things to do. I find world, national, and local food systems to be fascinating. I love cooking and making up new recipes and so I share them. It’s fun and informative.

I came to many of my conclusions about my own diet and the way eating affects the world by reading books and blogs. Some of the most accessible books I’ve read are:  Diet for a New America by John Robbins, Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver.

What rules do I eat by? I try to make sure my eating follows certain trends more than sticks to certain rules. Rules can be broken, and sometimes I like to eat Reese’s Pieces. The most important things to me are my food being healthy, delicious, and abundant while their environmental costs are low or better, help improve our environment. I am willing to spend more money (but not a ton more) if it means my food is healthier or more sustainably grown. And I love composting!

I don’t eat meat because its environmental cost is too high and I try to avoid overly packaged and processed foods because their environmental cost is too high AND they are unhealthy. Other than that, I find its more about what I DO eat and how wonderful it is.
